Wirkung und Wechselwirkung von Theophyllin und Chinin auf die neuromuskuläre Übertragung und die elektromechanische Kopplung am M. gastrocnemius

1982

It has been reported that theophylline improves the effect of quinine in relieving patients from nocturnal muscle cramps. We therefore examined the actions and interactions of quinine and theophylline on mechanical and electrical properties of the rabbit’s N. ischiadicus — M. gastrocnemius nerve-muscle preperation in situ. Maximal tension, rate of rise of tension, contraction time, relaxation time and latency of single maximal twitch, evoked by electrical stimulation of N. ischiadicus were measured before and after i.p. or iv. application of therapeutic doses of quinine and theophylline given alone or in combination. In addition, changes of conduction velocities of action potentials of the …

Effects of intermittent high frequency electrical stimulation on denervated EDL muscle of rabbit.

1990

This study was performed to determine whether electrical stimulation can retard denervation-induced changes. The denervated extensor digitorum longus of the rabbit, a fast-twitch muscle, was stimulated at a rate mimicking its motoneuron firing pattern. The 100-Hz stimulation given intermittently subjected the muscle to a low mean total daily frequency of 1.6 Hz. Four weeks of stimulation resulted in no effect upon the denervated stimulated muscle. This stimulation protocol, therefore, is unable to substitute for the lost neuronal influence of the nerve. The muscle contralateral to the stimulated side showed physiological changes making it unsuitable to serve as a control.

Neuromuscular Fatigue After a Ski Skating Marathon

2003

The aim of this study was to characterize neuromuscular fatigue in knee extensor muscles after a marathon skiing race (mean ± SD duration = 159.7 ± 17.9 min). During the 2 days preceding the event and immediately after, maximal percutaneous electrical stimulations (single twitch, 0.5-s tetanus at 20 and 80 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve of 11 trained skiers. Superimposed twitches were also delivered during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) to determine maximal voluntary activation (%VA). EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. MVC decreased with fatigue from 171.7 ± 33.7 to 157.3 ± 35.2 Nm (-8.4%; p < 0.005) while %VA did not change significantly. The RMS measured du…

a1D-Adrenoceptors are responsible for the high sensitivity and the slow time-course of noradrenaline-mediated contraction in conductance arteries.

2013

The objective of this study was to determine whether the different time-course characteristics of α1-adrenoceptor-mediated contraction in arteries can be related to the subtypes involved. Contractile responses to noradrenaline (NA) were compared with inositol phosphate accumulation and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 phosphorylation after α1-agonist stimuli in the same vessels in the presence or absence of α1-antagonists in rat or in α1-subtype knockout (KO) mice. Aorta, where α1D-AR is the main functional subtype, had higher sensitivity to NA (in respect of inositol phosphate [IP], pERK1/2, and contractile response) than tail artery, where the α1A-adrenoceptor subtype is pre…

Effects of a trail running competition on muscular performance and efficiency in well-trained young and master athletes

2010

International audience; To determine the acute effects of a trail running competition and the age-dependent differences between young and master athletes, 23 subjects [10 young (30.5 ± 7 years), 13 master (45.9 ± 5.9 years)] participated in a 55-km trail running competition. The study was conceived as an intervention study compromising pre, post 1, 24, 48 and 72 h measurements. Measurements consisted of blood tests, ergometer cycling and maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MVC). Parameters monitored included MVC, twitch-and M-wave properties, EMG (RMS) of the vastus lateralis, two locomotion efficiency calculations and muscle damage markers in the blood (CK, LDH). Results indicate pos…
